Types of higher education
The United States of America has four main types of higher
education institutions:
- Public universities
- Private universities
- Colleges
- Technical institutes
In the American system of higher education, the following degrees are awarded:
- Associate degrees (conferred after 2 years of studies)
- Bachelor’s degrees (4 years of studies)
• Master’s degrees (1 or 2 additional years after a bachelor’s
degree) - Doctoral degrees (PhD) (at least 2-3 years of further studies)
- Post-graduate Law degree (J.D.)
- Post-graduate medical degree (M.D.)

Application requirements
Secondary school leaving diploma (Diplôme de fin d’études secondaires)
Quotas or additional requirements:
- fill out the application form of the institution
- pay an application fee ($50-100 per university)
- SAT/ACT-test (standardised test widely used for college admissions in the United States)
- write 2-3 essays (personal statement)
- get a transcript (document listing your academic qualifications and marks)
- send in 2-3 letters of reference
- prepare for a possible interview (for some universities only)
What is the SAT?
Like American students, you may be required to take the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) in the last year of your secondary studies. The SAT is offered in Brussels and in Luxembourg (International School www.islux.lu).
It is advisable to take the test as early as possible, so that test results can reach the university admissions officers before the application deadlines. Some universities do not require the SAT and others accept alternatives like the ACT (American College Test).

Application
In the United States, application requirements can vary greatly from one institution to another. Check the specific requirements on the website of each institution’s international admissions office.
Deadlines
winter semester: from 1st August to 30th November summer semester: from 1st January to 30th April Begin your research at least 12 to 18 months prior to the academic year in which you hope to attend a college or university
Tuition fees
You have to pay tuition fees according to the status of the institution (public or private, two-year and four-year colleges or universities). Students who have limited financial resources should consider attending community colleges for the first two years of study, then transferring to a four-year institution using the 2+2 pathway. Community colleges usually have much lower tuition rates!

Financial Aid from the Luxembourg State
The Ministry of Research and Higher Education offers grants and loans to students enrolled in higher education and meeting certain conditions.
Financial aid is awarded only for recognised degree courses!
